The Outouka Village

identité visuelle du village des enfants

It was founded by Annika Skattum and Joachim Bassene in 2005.
The Outouka Village, located in Kafountine (in Casamance, Senegal), is an extension to The Children’s Home in Ziguinchor.

They have turned an ex-tourist camp into a creativity centre for children and adults.

The area spreads over one hectare. It is located near the village of Kafountine, by the Ocean. There is the beach in front of it, behind a sand dune.

What you can find today in the Outouka Village:

Traditional huts: they are used as accommodations for our visiting artists and for the Ziguinchor children. There is a communal bathroom near the huts and a family hut where traditional meals are prepared.

The large workshop in Outouka Village offers its walls as a working area for artists. Tables are provided for the students. The large workshop area also serves as a gallery for exhibits.

Most of the time, the activities take place in the shade, under the trees. However, when it’s raining during the winter season (from June to October), people find shelter in the workshop area. On a sand dune facing the sea, we have created a protected space suitable for meditation, yoga and therapeutic work.

The Outouka Village can be accessed through a sandy road, after a 20-minute walk or a 10-minute drive from the village. There is a village camp and a private property adjoining the area. In the back of the village, there is some fallow land, which becomes marshy during the rainy season.
